Bejing 2008 QRG
News Release #10 (2008/07/25)
We recently received queries from world wide asking for QRG about Special Event Stations. Actually all 5 stations will decide their own QRG by themselves, and could be any valid amateur radio QRG in China. Based on statistics that the stations operated in last 2 months, below are the possible QRGs:

NA-234 and the volcanoes
While the
NA-234 activity continues on the bands (with various
spots on DX cluster) both the
Cleveland and the
Okmok volcanoes status report eruptions. The alert color code is Orange. Stronger explosive activity could resume at any time with little or no warning (Okmok). The last
SPOT message has been sent from 52.8732, -169.7455 (at 03z 25th July), a little bit different from the other ones. May be one operator walked exploring the island. Beware from the lava, guys !!!

Hilberling cancels PT-8000
Message from Hans Hilberling
I regret to announce today that Hilberling GmbH has cancelled the production of the PT-8000 series of transceivers. I am really sorry that this will cause disappointment on your side. Let me explain briefly what had led to this decision: Hilberling had to counteract continuously obstacles to meet EU wide requirements. This has forced us multiple times to change the design of this high-end transceiver which often has been in conflict to our design goals. We finally could meet all our design numbers within a few prototypes but we and the numerous suppliers were not able to guarantee these numbers for the line production. Measures that would have to be taken to guarantee the specifications are in no way cost effective. All this has led to the a.m. decision to put everything on hold.Hilberling apologises for any inconvenience you had. We deeply appreciated the confidence you demonstrated for the PT-8000 series of HF/VHF-Transceivers.

The world's 1st sat messenger
The hams actually on Chuginadak Island (NA-234) send (not as often as we'd like) their co-ordinates using this
messenger. And the location can be easily checked thru a link to Google Maps.
Spots also works where cells don't. This is perfect for DXpedition to let the world know about their position, either for DX hunters and their families.

QARtest per IOTA
Paolo informa della nuova versione di
QARtest (2.3.0) che gestisce il Contest IOTA (previsto per questo weekend). Molto interessante l'opzione del riconoscimento automatico della referenza (ove possibile), in base alla condizione geografica o ad un elenco di stazioni con referenza pre-caricata. "
Nel caso di un prefisso o country corrispondente a più referenze, viene proposta quella più probabile. Ad esempio, qualsiasi stazione della Gran Bretagna ossia G, GM, GW sarà proposta come EU005, a meno che il nominativo non sia esplicitamente presente con un'altra referenza nel file iotacalls.mlt. E' chiaro che ci possono essere stazioni inglesi che trasmettono da altre isole, ma che vengono proposte come EU005: in questo caso è necessario modificare la referenza come da indicazioni del corrispondente, spostandosi sul campo con la barra spaziatrice. Un altro esempio, più vicino a noi, viene dalla Sardegna: IM0 può essere sia EU041 che EU165: il programma propone EU041, che è la più probabile. Se il corrispondente ci passa EU165 sarà sufficiente correggere la referenza. Se successivamente contatteremo il corrispondente su un'altra banda/modo, il sistema proporrà la referenza corretta prendendola da quella inserita a log nel Qso precedente. E' sempre comunque indispensabile verificare referenza corretta, ASCOLTANDOLA DAL CORRISPONDENTE. Quella proposta dal sistema serve solo per avere un suggerimento, ma non deve mai essere presa per "oro colato". Chi non desiderasse utilizzare il suggerimento della referenza automatico, può semplicemente eliminare o rinominare il file iotacalls.qcl (solo quello!) e riavviare QARTest." Bravo Paolo !

OG0A and CU2A
The OG0A IARU contest operation produced 2680 QSOs and 292 mults in poor Aurora conditions.Bob, W6RGG added another 302 Qs after the contest.But Northern QSOs and strawberries were sweat!

AZORES ACTIVITY SLATED FOR JULY 21-28, 2008
Toni, OH2UA and Martti, OH2BH will be in the Azores doing some antenna work and will occasionally appear on the bands. In the IOTA contest they will activate CU2A. QSL via OH2BH.

NA-234: breaking news
The KL7DX IOTA-expedition to Chuginadak Island (Aleutians islands, Alaska) is under feasibility review by team members Yuri Sushkin N3QQ, Sergey Morozov RA3NAN and Yuri Zaruba UA9OBA.
Okmok Volcano, located 75 miles away from our destination continues to erupt.
The volcano is currently at aviation color code RED and alert level WARNING. All areas immediately around the volcano are considered hazardous. Airborne ash and gas continues to drift with the wind and pose a hazard to aviation in the area.
Satellite data continue to show a long (~250km) plume moving east, the height of the plume is approximately 9,100m (30,000 ft) above sea level. Cleveland Volcano on Chuginadak island have current aviation color code YELLOW and volcano alert level ADVISORY. Please see

Team of Russian Robinson Club is planning to land on the island by boat and start operation between July 19th and July 21st with participation in IOTA Contest July 26-27th weather and seismic conditions permitting. QSL via AC7DX.

Socotra AF-028
Tre giorni fa su Repubblica.it Iaia Pedemonte scrive un bell'
articolo su Socotra, isola al largo dello Yemen che per noi, cacciatori di isole è una vera rarità. Con la referenza
AF-028, Socotra è accreditata solo dallo 0,3% dei partecipanti allo IOTA visto che l'unica attività è stata quella di John Farrar nel 1964 come
VS9SJF (interessante il suo sito dedicato appunto a
The island of Soqotra). L'isola è entrata a far parte dei
patrimoni dell'Umanità e l'Unesco ha tutte le intenzioni di verificare che vengano rispettate tutte le regole per salvaguardare questo luogo di importanza capitale. Il turismo è cresciuto moltissimo negli ultimi anni, peccato che le licenze radio continuino ad essere praticamente inottenibili. Speriamo bene, d'altronde fino a non molto tempo fa anche l'Albania era off-limit.

DV-Dongle
Siete curiosi di buttarvi nel nuovo mondo D-Star ma non avete nessuna intenzione di comprare un nuovo apparato dotato di simile tecnologia ? Adesso vi basta un pc, la connessione Internet, una cuffia con microfono ed il
DV-Dongle, uno "scatolotto" che vi consente di entrare nei gateway D-Star e ricevere (e trasmettere) esattamente come se aveste un RTX dedicato. Requisito minimo del PC è la RAM di almeno 512Mb ed una porta USB 2.0 ed ovviamente il software DVTool. La
IFR Communications distribuisce DV-Dongle in esclusiva per l'Italia (e la Svizzera, RSM, CdV e Malta).

Il Convegno di Bologna
Ho letto la locandina del prossimo congresso HF di Bologna (il 23esimo) e, come spesso accade, la giornata più interessante è quella di sabato 27 settembre. Relatori di punta (a mio parere) saranno Robert SP5XVY per la spedizione a Ducie e soprattutto Max I8NHJ per Scarborough. Ho già visto in precedenza le presentazioni di Max e valgono la pena, non solo per l'aspetto multimediale ma proprio per l'interessantissimo contenuto. La bravura di Max è tale che anche le cose più difficili le fa sembrare facili. Spero riesca a far ascoltare il feroce pileup a cui è stato sottoposto mentre era in bilico sul roccione. Chiude la giornata Pietro IV3EHH con la premiazione del 40&80. Questo sembrerebbe ufficializzare il nuovo manager del contest ? Auguri a lui, autore fra l'altro di uno dei softwares per la gestione del contest stesso. La giornata di domenica (così come parte del sabato) prevede l'intervento dei soliti noti, proprio quelli che non avrei voluto incontrare ed in effetti resto volentieri a casa per evitare l'agonia di certi racconti di viaggio. Io avrei preferito vedere ad esempio Vlad UA4WHX che incarna veramente lo spirito dello spedizioniere. Ma voglio credere che ad eventuale invito non fosse disponibile. A quanto pare "tirano" ancora i racconti dalla JT land, nonostante se ne sia letto su RR ed STR praticamente ogni anno (yawn). Un saluto agli organizzatori ringraziandoli per avermi sempre ospitato con incredibile gentilezza. Quest'anno con XYL e figlio al seguito festeggeremo il mio compleanno (che capita più o meno sempre nel weekend del congresso) senza parlare di radio ! Ed è un compleanno importante per chi sa la mia data di nascita !

Il caro Giovanni I5JHW è nuovamente in partenza. Me lo aveva anticipato un mese fa ma la notizia ora è ufficiale. Sarà attivo da Cocos Keeling in agosto. Ma ecco il suo racconto: "
Dunque questo è il viaggio del 30th anno di licenza.......I5JHW nasce nell' agosto del 1978, e quindi per un evento così importante (per me), dopo 34 uscite dall'Italia con la radio ecco di nuovo una sfida: prima di attaccare la radio al chiodo, gli anni cominciano a salire, il 18 Agosto saranno......67 (ricordate di fargli gli auguri!) e prima che qualche "acciacco" ti capiti, volevo fare VK9C, non sò perchè ma fino dall' inizio della caccia al dx questo Cocos Keeling ha sempre acceso la mia fantasia ed era una specie di dream da realizzare, adesso ci siamo: VK9CJW.......22/29 agosto 2008, come al solito operazioni da vacanziero, non ci sono altri OM nel gruppo, ICOM IC 718 e 706MKII (riserva), amplificatore ACOM 1010 e antenna 7+, 40/10 metri SSB e RTTY, come sempre qsl via I5JHW bureau e diretta con SASE e contributo postale. Aland islands, Brando, OG0A
Pertti, OH2PM and Martti, OH2BH will be taking a ferry to Aland Islands today Friday and will be QRV in the IARU Contest, signing OG0A. QSL via OH2BH. Outside of the contest they will be using their own calls; OH0R (OH2PM) and OH0B (OH2BH). QSL to their home CBA. Please note that the Market Reef group will use OJ0A, and make sure that you realize the one-letter difference. Following the contest weekend, upon the Market Reef group's Monday return to OH0, Bob Vallio, W6RGG will stay in OH0 for another day and will be active as OH0/W6RGG. QSL via home call.
These activities can produce several points for your

Questa fotografia ritrae un notissimo OM italiano ai suoi esordi come SWL (I1-12548). Si tratta di Fausto I4EAT che è attualmente al vertice della DXCC Challenge DeSoto Cup (

SX5C Special Call DxPedition STROGILI & Lighthouse IPSILI.
The following Greek hams: SV1GE John, SV1JG Cliff, SV1RC Spiros, SV1RP George,SV1EEX Nikiforos, SV1GRM Theodoros, SV1GYG John, SV1HER Sotirios & SV1JCZ Daniel will activate the rocky islet STROGILI, IOTA: EU-001, GIOTA: DKS 001, MIA: MGD-022 with lighthouse ham activation of the islet.
Lighthouse named IPSILI: WLOTA: L-0237, ARLHS: GRE-123. The lighthouse was manufactured in 1917. The altitude of tower is 9 metres and the height of focal plane is 85 metres.
All the above hams are also members of the Radio Amateur Association of Greece (
http://www.raag.org).
It will be the first time that this islet is going to be activated for ham purposes and so does the lighthouse "IPSILI".
"We are very glad to announcement the participation to SX5C, one (1) operator of VP6DX, DUCIE Island Dxpedition & five (5) operators from the YK9SV,ARWAD Island Dxpedition".
The Stroggyli Kastellorizou also called Strongili or Strogili or Ipsili, is a Greek islet which lies in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, about five (5) nautical miles south-east of the island of Kastelorizo. The islet is about 1.5 km long, and up to 700 m wide. It covers an area of about 0.9 km². It is rather flat and covered with macchia. Strongili is the easternmost Greek Territory. It is not inhabited, and has a lighthouse named Ispili, which has the characteristic of being the easternmost building in Greece.
Strongili (Strogili,Stroggyli,Ipsili) ist eine kleine, unbewohnte griechische Insel der ostlichen Dodekanes. Strongili liegt etwa 5km ostlich der Insel Kastellorizo und ist damit die ostlichste Insel Griechenlands. Sie ist lediglich gut 3km vor der turkischen Kuste entfernt. Die Insel ist ca. 1,5 km lang, bis zu 0,7 km breit und hat eine Flache von etwa 90 ha. Strongili ist eher flach und kaum bewaldet. Da sie landwirtschaftlich nicht mehr genutzt wird, bestimmen Buschwerk und Macciabewuchs das Ausssehen. Die geschichtlich unbedeutende Insel ware auch wohl nicht weiter erwahnenswert, wenn sie nicht die ostlichste Stelle Griechenlands darstellen wurde, und der auf ihr stehende Leuchtturm das ostlichste Gebaude Griechenlands ist.

Slide the radio
Mikael Silvanto reinvented the way to tune the radio. Don't turn the vfo, simply slide the entire radio. Ok ok it's for AM/FM radios but it's nice !
