IOTA – IT help needed

IOTA urgently needs developers to work on coding for the IOTA website.
Volunteers should be reasonably familiar with MySQL, PHP (object oriented), and Javascript (including aspects such as jQuery).

The code is version controlled using Github so familiarity with this would also be useful.
IOTA operates on a tiny budget so the role is primarily for volunteers.
Please contact iota.online@rsgb.org.uk if you think you may be able to help.
We are looking forward to getting as many expressions of interest as possible, to enable the enhancement of the current systems to proceed in a timely fashion.

REPUBLIC OF SOUTH SUDAN, Z81X

A multinational group of Dietmar, DL3DXX; Wayne, N7NG; Hans, PB2T; Olli, OH0XX; Martti, OH2BH; Pertti, OH2PM; Veijo, OH6KN and Tevfik, TA1HZ (team doctor) will be in Juba, South Sudan from November 14 - 28, 2013 and will activate Z81X with an emphasis on low bands, 160m and 80m.

The period includes the CQWW CW contest with some single-band entries and low-band SSB focus during the contest weekend.

Hosted by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, the group led by Hans, PB2T will conduct a series of workshops and establish a sound amateur radio spectrum management regime and related regulations. It
will also introduce Amateur Radio to the Ministry of Education. Also participating in these efforts are two local amateurs; Massimo, Z81B (IZ0EGB) and Diya, Z81D (YI1DZ). This part of the program is supported by Yasme Foundation Inc.

The plan is to activate three FTDx3000 stations with amps, low-band verticals and beverage antennas. Two different radio locations may be used. The operation will be generator based.

The Z81X team will use their QRZ.com pages for providing further updates and recognizing their supporters, with Vlad, UA6JD as their webmaster.

Z81X Project Goodwill South Sudan is organized jointly by Radio Arcala, DX University, IARU Region 1 and Rock City Investments Co., and the equipment sponsor is Yaesu Musen Co. Ltd of Japan.

In support of the DX University, we will take note of specific relationships between pileup behavior and operator technique. Additional information will be available before the expedition begins.

The highest cost item is equipment transport, with courier service the only reliable means of transportation. The group welcomes support from individuals, clubs and foundations to offset some of the high equipment transport expenses. You may contact any of the group members for your potential support or use PayPal at Z81X QRZ.com.

RTLSDR for HF 0-54MHz Assembled

A complete USB ezCap tuner for use as an RTLSDR with a built-in HF converter for 0-54MHz. Complete, assembled unit includes both amplified frequency converter and RTLSDR tuner with no additional drivers needed!

This converter, developed by KN0CK, combines the popular ezCap-based RTLSDR dongle with a high quality HF up-converter designed around a Mini-Circuits amplifier to allow the RTLSDR to receive signals in the 0-54MHz band, from longwave frequencies through the 10m band all in one unit! This completely integrated dongle could even be mounted at your antenna's feed point using an active USB extension, if you have a permanent antenna installation.

Combined with tuning and decoding software, you can do nearly anything from DC to HF with the RTLSDR and KN0CK HF Converter. This converter has the same electrical specifications as the Rev 3 converter, but with a different board layout to accomodate a range of dongle shapes.

Each Converter Hand Tested!
Features:

Portable HF for 'On the Go' or Fixed Operation
Precision 0402 SMT Components

Save Pagan island (OC-086)

Pagan Island, the “Crown Jewel” of the Marianas, is again slated for certain environmental devastation, this time by a proposal from the U.S. Military to use it for “live-fire training” which includes everything from artillery to bombing.
Pagan is a small island in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). It is one of the most biologically and geologically diverse islands in the archipelago, and is home to many threatened and endangered species, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. Aside from its stunning beauty and rich ecological resources, Pagan is also one of the most habitable of the northern most islands in the CNMI. In fact, this island has supported the ancestors of Pagan islanders for over 3,000 years, as evidenced by Chamorro stone ruins found skirting its beautiful beaches.
The U.S. Military plans to occupy ALL of Pagan Island for live-fire training and military exercises, ignoring the indigenous rights of Pagan Islanders, and the devastating environmental impacts that such activity will certainly cause.

SWL Participation
While primarily an amateur radio contest, WPX RTTY is also popular with SWL enthusiasts.  Thanks to Marek, SP7DQR, who has written SWL log check software and to Dan, I1-12387, who will lead the SWL log checking.
  • Entrants follow the regular rules for a single-op, except they are logging the received QSO and not transmitting.
  • Optionally, each side of a QSO may be logged as separate QSO lines, i.e., two lines.
  • Received call signs may not appear more than three times per band in the log.  Any additional entries of the same call sign will not count.
  • Logs must be submitted in the standard Cabrillo format for CQ WPX RTTY.  Make sure one of the following lines is in the header:
    CATEGORY: SWL (Cabrillo 2.0)
    CATEGORY-TRANSMITTER: SWL(Cabrillo 3.0)

Android App to Display SW Radio SWBC Schedules

Shortwave Broadcast Schedules is a handy app that displays broadcast schedules of over 12,000 longwave, mediumwave, and shortwave broadcast stations.
The stations are initially listed in order by frequency. Stations currently on the air are displayed in bold, making it quick and easy to see which stations are on right now.
Tap on a station to bring up more information about the station, such as the country of origin, target area, and programming language.
Click the Update button, and the app will check to see if there is a more recent version of the schedule. If so, it will be downloaded and installed. You need an internet connection for this to work, of course.

Eham SWL Survey

Do you ever do any casual SWL'ing on the non-Ham bands these days...? Did you do much SWL'ing during your pre-Ham days...? What do you think of the SWL "scene" in 2013, compared to when you first started...?

1) YES! I still listen to those parts of the spectrum that do not contain Amateur transmissions, and I love doing so...
2) NO! I never was a SWL, not "way back when", & not now, either...
3) The SWL bands to-day are far too populated by domestic right-wing political & religious stations...
4) I occasionally "snoop" the SWL bands when I have nothing better to do, but that is very rare...
5) There are FAR less foreign broadcasters on SW than there were "back in the day", I'm afraid...
6) I sorta MISS the high-powered lectures on the evils of capitalism from Radio Moscow, Radio Havana, Radio Tirana, Radio Peking, etc.

7) Bye-bye SWL'ing---NOBODY misses you!
