According to the Russian Strategic Nuclear Forces blog three Gonets-M spacecrafts launche together with the Yubileiny (Sputnik RS-30) received the NORAD catalog numbers 32953, 32954 and 32955. Thus the RS-30 should have the 3295 number (2008-025D international designation). From the Celestrak site here is the element sset for the 32956 spacecraft:

In order to allow the entire world to participate in this event, it is not enough to hold a party over the radio on the actual birthday. Therefore, the two contests that are closely related to the WAE award, the WAEDC CW and the WAEDC SSB, will form the timing cornerstones of our Marathon. Especially for our friends outside of Europe is this competition a good possibility to receive lots of band points for the WAE Marathon.

The DARC Committee for DX and HF Contesting is the ideal host to invite the radio amateurs of the world to hold many contacts with their European partners. Participate as well, and maybe you will even go on a WAE expedition!

We are celebrating the anniversary with the issuance of an achievement certificate similar to the WAE Award in accordance with the current award rules.

In the 21st century, there are already many different electronic log and internet applications in use in amateur radio. This fact will be used for applying for the WAE60 Marathon as well as for the award. In addition, all participants will be eligible for the drawing for attractive prizes.

Internews is seeking a Radio Journalism Adviser

Internews is a non-profit organization that works to improve access to information for people around the world by fostering independent media and promoting open communications policies in the public interest. Internews is seeking a Radio Journalism Adviser to set up and lead a project that will establish a Humanitarian Information Radio Service for Somali refugees and local people in Dadaab, North East Kenya.

In addition to overall project management, budget management and supervision of staff, the position will involve training up a team of refugees to become community radio reporters in the Dadaab camps, plus providing training for reporters at the existing community radio station in Garissa. The level of training will range from instilling basic journalistic roles, responsibilities, ethics and reporting skills to teaching more advanced program making and coverage of specialized areas such as health, humanitarian rights and gender awareness.

ARLS006 New Russian Satellite in Orbit

A Russian rocket launched from Plesetsk on May 23 carried a number of payloads to orbit, including a new Amateur Radio satellite named Yubileiny -- Russian for jubilee -- since christened Radio Sputnik 30 (RS-30).

Operational details are vague at this time. Amateurs throughout the world report receiving signals at 435.315 and 435.215 MHz; some report reception of CW telemetry while others report what appear to be image transmissions from the satellite. RS-30 is orbiting at a maximum altitude of 1500 km, creating a substantial communications footprint below.

The satellite will broadcast audio and video about the history of the Soviet and Russian space programs, as well as signals imitating those broadcast by Sputnik in 1957.

According to the satellite's launch team, "The motive for development of the Yubileiny small spacecraft was the 50th anniversary of the first space satellite. With the help of that satellite, the new space systems and equipment are expected to get flight qualification, and radio-amateurs all over the world will be
able to receive information on the history of space development and domestic cosmonautics achievements."

BS7H: best DXpedition 2007/2008

Al consueto appuntamento del DX Dinner di Dayton la SWODXA (South West Ohio DX Association) ha designato BS7H come la miglior DXpedition dell'anno 2007/2008. Con quasi 46000 QSO la spedizione ci fa sentire particolarmente orgogliosi per la presenza di un notissimo radioamatore italiano, Max I8NHJ che nel suo passato ha fatto anche parte di queste attività: EL2PP, 1A0KM, JT1Y, E30GA, T77V, TT8MM, T32R, K5K, XR0X, S05X, 4O3T. C'è di che essere fieri per questa continua presenza di italiani al vertice del radiantismo mondiale (CQ DX Hall of Fame, IOTA, DXCC Challenge). Io che conosco personalmente Max non posso che approvare la scelta di averlo nel team di BS7H per la sua bravura, disponibilità, esperienza ed educazione. What if... I was living on Mars ?

It is year 2020 and we have been able to build a spaceship that will take us to Mars. The scientists are worried about over population on earth and would like to design a futuristic, self sustaining city on Mars. Your job is design this city. So the task, if you and your team of specialists decide to choose it, is to design a life sustaining city on Mars.

1. You will need to investigate what it takes for a community of people to live and survive on the planet. Don't forget important issues such as: How will you get air? Food? Water? And what other essentials will be needed to sustain life? Researching websites about Mars for information will be helpful in planning and designing your city.

2. From this information you can then concept a city plan. Your city plan must include houses, shops, businesses and a way to transport resources needed from Earth. Include any other structures you feel necessary to create your city, but you must explain why you feel they are needed in your city. Will your city hold up to any weather or other problems on Mars? Will there be transportation? If so, what kind?

3. Write a plan that explains all the different areas and your reason for the city design.

4. Create a drawing of the layout of your city’s design to provide a visual of your city concept. The drawing may be by hand or computer but it must be original.

Paolo Nespoli a Venaria Reale

Nell'ambito della manifestazione L'Esercito alla Venaria Reale, svoltosi nel weekend del 24 e 25 maggio 2008, tra gli stand allestiti ai Portici di Castelvecchio della Reggia c'era quello della ThalesAlenia Space con un ospite d'eccezione, l'astronauta italiano Paolo Nespoli, (IZ0JPA) membro dell'equipaggio della missione Esperia STS-120 che nell'ottobre del 2007 si agganciò alla ISS per aggiungere il Node2, un nuovo pezzo tutto italiano, alla stazione spaziale. Il 7 novembre Nespoli ritornò dopo 238 orbite attorno al pianeta Terra. Disponibilissimo per rispondere alle domande del pubblico (anche quelle più imbarazzanti sulla scelta del nucleare e sugli UFO!), Nespoli ha accettato con piacere la mia richiesta di una foto col mio Mattia (che ormai adesso ha 3 anni!). Speriamo che sia di buon auspicio e che tutta la mia passione per lo spazio e l'astronautica possa, con questo incontro, trasmettersi di padre in figlio ! Grazie Maggiore.

DXCC Challenge – 3,000 Level

It is with great pleasure that we announce the new DXCC DeSoto Cup Challenge winner for 2007! Fausto Minardi, I4EAT achieved this reaching 3,129 band points! Second and third place medals have been earned by W4DR at 3,124 and OZ1LO at 3,119. You may remember Fausto moved ahead of Bob briefly in 2006. Nineteen have now exceeded the 3,000 level as shown below. Also, congratulations to 2 newcomers to the 3,000 club, W3UR and HAØDU!!

OZ5FYN (EU-172) Special Event Station

At June 1st. the EDR 5th. Precinct is having a fieldtrip to the Museum of The Cold War (1947-89) at the Langeland fortress. More or less all local branches have announced their participation. We will be QRV with the call of the precinct OZ5FYN during the whole event. Location will be in JO54IR and IOTA EU-172, Langeland is one of the Fyn group Islands. For the dia fy-019. Activity will start with participation in the inter-Danish activity contest at 80 meters, right after the contest, starting at 10.00 UT the activity will be focused at Europe round 3750 KHz ±QRM. During the afternoon we will be QRV at the higher bands until appox. 14.30 UT. We will also establish an 50 MHz station capable of all mode incl. demonstrating of JT6m and SSTV. Spot QRG´s will be 50.173, 50.230 & 50.510 MHz ± QRM.

New Satellite Receives OSCAR Designation

Earlier this week, Bill Tynan, W3XO, announced that Amateur Radio Satellite Delfi C-3 has been issued an OSCAR number: Delfi-C3 OSCAR-64 or Dutch OSCAR-64. The shortened version of either of these two designations is DO-64.
Delfi C-3 was successfully launched April, 28, 2008 from India aboard a Polar launch vehicle and was successfully commissioned, currently transmitting telemetry on the 2 meter amateur band. In addition to its 2 meter downlink, Delfi C-3 has an uplink on the 70 cm band.
This newest amateur satellite was developed by a team of some 60 students and facility members from various polytechnic schools in The Netherlands.
Delfi C-3 carries two experiments: one involving thin film solar cells developed by Dutch Space, and an autonomous wireless Sun sensor from the Dutch Government Research Institute (TNO). According to Delfi C-3 Project Manager Wolter Jan Ubbels, Delfi C-3 has been duly co ordinated through Region 1 IARU representative Graham Shirville, G3VZV, and that the satellite "meets all of the criteria necessary to be issued an OSCAR number."
"AMSAT-NA is pleased to welcome DO-64 into the family of Amateur Radio satellites," Tynan said. "We are hopeful that it will fulfill its intended mission of furthering education and increasing interest in the Amateur Radio space program. We congratulate all of those responsible for designing, building, testing and launching this new Amateur Radio satellite and look forward to its long and productive life."

NEW DX SUMMIT

The original OH2AQ DX Summit was launched in 1998. It represented something that changed the entire DX hunt. Spinning the dial became old history that would never return.

Arcala Radio, OG8X

The station OG8X, located within the aurora oval, is signed up for M2 category entry in the CQ WPX Contest from the small village of Arcala at 65 degrees North where temperatures still run below freezing.

Arcala Extremes is an alliance of serious contesters typically heading South but now they have made plans to face an ultimate challenge. Change North and South and hit the pot over the next few years when new Cycle 24 makes signals travel that far North. OG8X signals will be fluttery, coming with the sound of Northern Lights.

Ham Radio Deluxe v4.0

From the HRD Ham Radio Deluxe website: Version 4.0 has been released. For the rest of 2008 v4.0 will be in maintenance mode - bugs fixed, support enhanced but no new major features. The aim is to ship 4.0 as a stable release of HRD until mid-2009.

At the same time new features will be added to version 4.2. There is a lot to do:

* DM780: HamDRM, FSK, SSTV modes (B&W, PD, Robot)
* HRD: Better support for TS-2000 and TS-480
* HRD: Correct support problems for other radios
* HRD: Better rotator support - add more rotators
* A new Satellite Tracking program
* And much, much more

The main project is the Satellite Tracking where the current HRD satellite tracking will be made standalone. With the prospect of the German P3E High Earth Orbit satellite being launched in 2008 thngs are looking up on the satellite front.

Rockall: if you can't hear them, read them

Un bel ricordo del 2004

Non ricordavo nemmeno più questa foto, scattata da Ian G3TMA (e presente sul sito da JA1QXY) mentre affronto con Derek G3KHZ (che ha in mano il permesso di sbarco) il viaggio che ci porterà a Pulau Satang Besar per quella attività dal Borneo dell'ormai lontano 2004. Ian era stato nostro compagno di avventura su Pulau Muara Besar (OC-165) ma decise di non unirsi a noi per l'operazione da OC-184. Da allora Derek ha continuato a divertirsi andando per tre anni di fila nelle isole P29 mentre io ho appeso il cappello al chiodo avendo una famiglia che non concede certe avventure. E' stato per me piacevole trovare su Internet, a seguito di una normale ricerca, questa immagine che mi riporta ad uno dei momenti più piacevoli della mia vita radioamatoriale.

Weather fax & JT65

Continuo a dilettarmi con i modi digitali ed ecco riesumato il weather fax, con cui mi sono cimentato per tanto tempo nel passato. Questa è una mappa ricavata grazie a JVCOMM32 (versione unregistered) decodificando il segnale di Hamburg Meteo a 13882 kHz (120/576 per i dettagli della trasmissione).

Questa invece è la copia dei nominativi ricevuti in JT65 usando Multipsk. La frequenza è 14.0755 Khz USB. Un altro modo decodificato grazie a questo bel software completo ma, a mio avviso, molto "incasinato" nella presentazione.

Questo per dimostrare che c'è veramente tanto nel variegato mondo della radio. Per tutti i gusti e accessibile a tutti. A volte basta un po' di pazienza, girare in rete per cercare le info giuste ed un software, meglio se gratuito. La radio ovviamente fa parte del nostro shack. Quando c'è un po' di stanchezza per le HF basta girare il VFO ed ascoltare altre frequenze per continuare il divertimento.

MM/K9AJ/P Rockall EU-189 website

From the MM/K9AJ/P Rockall website: "As is clearly evident, there is not much room atop Rockall to erect large beam antennas. Through much planning and logistics, Mike will use a Yaesu FT100D powered by two 115A Deep Cycle batteries. Aerial will be a simple vertical with radials thrown over the rock. He will use 20 and 40m only. Mike is mostly a CW operator so expect the majority of QSO’s to be that mode. An FT897 will be used as a backup rig." and also: "On May 12, at 08:30z the Elinca leaves for Rockall. Should weather/sea state conditions be kind, they will head straight to Rockall, a journey which takes approx 30 hours."

Banda di Frequenza 7100 – 7200 KHz – apertura a Radioamatori Italiani

Arriva da Alberto IZ0FMA la gradita notizia dell'estensione a 7200 kHz per la banda dei 40 metri. Ecco la comunicazione (nella quale sono tra i destinatari) di Alberto e la lettera ufficiale del Ministero a tutti gli ispettorati Territoriali. Grazie per la cortesia di avermi informato. Il mio primissimo commento è: finalmente non ci saranno più le lotte storiche per l'occupazione della frequenza nel 40&80, ma occhio all'SWR, le antenne devono risuonare su una frequenza più ampia !!!!

Rockall island (EU-189) news.

The team departed yesterday (12 May) with the chartered 67 foot yacht going via St. Kilda and they will reach the island in about 3 days ! Then do not expect any activity until 15-16 May. There will be a very huge pileup but if you can't work EU-189 don't worry. With the increased interest in the Rockall adventure two additional trips have already been planned. These will depart Leverburgh on Sunday 22 June and Saturday 16 August. There are currently eight berths available for each trip. We hope at least one Radio Ham will be onboard each of the next two trips.

My 1st MFSK16

This is the Multipsk waterfall screenshot of my first MFSK16 report, for the QSO between DC1NSK and HZ8ZI, this morning, 06:18z on 14.071 kHz. I was looking for psk and jt65 signals and suddenly I heard this strange modulation. I tried some of the Multipsk modes and bingo, I decoded the QSO. It's not so common to listen to MFSK16 communications but now I know how they sound !

Ecco finalmente il primissimo QSO PSK ricevuto con il NUE-PSK, quel fantastico gioiellino che permette di ricevere (e trasmettere) senza computer, con la sola connessione audio all'RTX ed una tastiera da collegare al modem stesso. Il QSO in questione è tra RA9HL e I1FYB su 14.070 poco dopo le 12utc di oggi. L'alimentazione era costituita inizialmente da due pile a 9V che però, visto il paese di origine (BY), han ceduto dopo poche ore di funzionamento. Ho usato quindi un alimentatore per PC che eroga 16V in corrente continua. L'importante (come raccomandato dalle istruzioni) è togliere le pile se si alimenta dall'esterno ! Immagino la goduria di poterlo avere con sè in un monitoring portatile, in qualche attività SOTA: ovviamente io la penso sempre dal punto di vista dell'SWL ma nulla toglie di poterlo usare in un normale QSO (anche se il solito problema dei QSO in PSK è che troppo spesso si scambiano troppi dati anche quando non espressamente richiesti ed i collegamenti durano una vita !)

ARI INTERNATIONAL DX CONTEST - Invio log

Vi comunico con rammarico che si è verificato un imprevisto disservizio nell'instradamento dei log dell'ARI International DX Contest sul sistema centrale dell'ARI. Il problema è stato da me ripetutamente segnalato all'intero Consiglio Direttivo e all'attuale unico Coordinatore Sito Web e Servizi Online, IK1PMR. Personalmente, non avendo alcuna diretta possibilità di intervento, in attesa della soluzione del problema e al fine di evitare la perdita dei log già trasmessi, invito i partecipanti che non avessero ricevuto il previsto riscontro automatico di avvenuto ricevimento del log, a re-inoltrare il log al mio indirizzo personale "it9blb at infcom.it" indicando nel soggetto del messaggio il nominativo usato e la categoria: es. IT9BLB SOMIX, SOSSB, SOCW, SORTTY, MO, SWL. Provvederò manualmente (quindi non in tempo reale) a confermare l'avvenuta ricezione del log.

WSPR top calls

Some statistics from the meptspots database downloadable from the wsprnet website (update 0735z 8-May-2008). There are 402 reporters and the top ones are VE1VDM (with 27969 reports) followed by K1JT (24892) and W1BW (23269), while the most heard stations (1863 as total) are K1JT (27047 reports), VE1VDM (23709) and WB3ANQ (22160) [IV3GTH, I2KBD and IK1RKU among the italians]. The longest distance WSPR report is PA3ABK heard by ZL1ANY with 11937 miles (not counting the strange callsign/grids reported which seem wrong decodes). F1VS and F8RZ heard by ZL1BPU (11831 and 11811 miles). The most used band for WSPR reports is 30m (502028 spots) followed by 80m (40844) and 40m (15682). Me personally I decoded (and sent to the database) 2191 spots, using the online receiver located in W2 zone.

W7KFI e KH3: ennesimo rinvio

A quanto pare il viaggio di Susan W7KFI a Johnston KH3 non s'ha ancora da fare. La sua ultima laconica comunicazione è che ad Honolulu sta cercando di trovare i soldi per riparare il motore della sua barca. L'unica cosa da fare è quindi aspettare. Magari nel frattempo qualcuno molto più esperto e con meno problemi di soldi si organizza per riportare on the air questo ambito country.

WSPR e la propagazione

Molto interessante lo studio fatto da F6IRF sul suo blog circa la non-bilateralità della propagazione: per dirla in breve, esaminando gli spots in 30m tra lui e K1JT ha riscontrato che Joe lo spotta sovente al mattino mentre F6IRF non è in grado di ascoltarlo. Con un po' di tempo a disposizione cercherò anche io di fare qualche analisi dal database presente su wsprnet. 19 sono le stazioni italiane (I1KTC I2KBD I6BQI IG8EWK IK0OKY IK1RKU IK2DJV IK2JET IK4GBU IK4IDP IK5PWB IK7UXY IO2REP IS0XDA IV3GTH IW4ARD IW5DHN IZ1KXQ IZ1MHY) monitorate via WSPR finora. Un po' pochine rispetto alla semplicità di questo modo digitale, ancor più semplice del PSK (in fondo non si deve fare QSO ma solo emettere il proprio segnale). Chissà se insistendo nell'argomento stimolerò altre stazioni a provare. Ben vengano i commenti delle suddette stazioni per animare un po' il blog.
