A Ham Radio Adventure Book
G'day Everyone and Welcome. My name is Robert Norman. I'm 59 years old. We live in Adelaide but when able to get away, I operate my Ham Radio Station from our property of arid mallee country which is about 150 kms from here. This book has been written to encourage others to take an interest in Amateur Radio. The novel is entitled ' Oscar's Amateur Radio Adventure ' and tells the story of Oscar, a 14 year old boy who finds an old wireless in the basement at his Grandparents' house. Then, taking an interest in radios, he obtains his beginners grade Amateur Radio licence and soon finds himself in the Australian Outback visiting a Solar Powered Ham Radio Station. (link)
Catch a wave from space
We are delighted to announce that Einstein@Home has made its first discovery: a radio pulsar, found in data from the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.
Details are available in a paper published online by Science today. Science has given us permission to post a copy of the abstract and paper here. They are also on the Science website here. The manuscript is also in the arXiv preprint archive (use the PDF link in the top right corner).
A press-conference webcast about this first discovery is also available.
The name of the pulsar is PSR J2007+2722. It is a 40.8 Hz isolated pulsar, 17,000 light years distant in the plane of the Galaxy, and is most likely a Disrupted Recycled Pulsar (DRP). If so, it is the fastest DRP yet discovered.
The Einstein@Home volunteers whose computers found the pulsar with the highest significance are Chris and Helen Colvin, from Ames Iowa and Daniel Gebhardt, Musikinformatik, Universitaet Mainz.

Two Years with the Natives in the Western Pacific
This book is a collection of sketches written on lonely evenings during my voyage; some of them have been published in daily papers, and were so kindly received by the public as to encourage me to issue them in book form. In order to retain the freshness of first impressions, the original form has been but slightly changed, and only so much ethnological detail has been added as will help to an understanding of native life. The book does not pretend to give a scientific description of the people of the New Hebrides; that will appear later; it is meant simply to transmit some of the indelible impressions the traveller was privileged to receive,—impressions both stern and sweet.
